The days are already getting shorter and summer is going to be over before we know it. So let’s make the most of it by hosting an extraordinary picnic! Need help thinking beyond the typical burgers and dogs?
Here are 5 tips to creating an elevated outdoor dining experience to make the most of those summer nights.
Nothing says fine dining like linens, china and glassware! It’s no fun to cut a steak on paper or plastic . And who really enjoys wine in plastic cups? Yes - the real stuff… take it out, dust it off…use it. You’ll feel like your dining on the patio of a 5 star restaurant.
Water, water, water! Sparking or flat, pitchers or glass bottles, In addition to wine and cocktails be sure to have plenty of water on the table within reach so guests can serve themselves.
The menu doesn’t have to be fussy to be elegant. Feature seasonal foods and keep it light. Grilled, marinated meat or fish, a platter of grilled vegetables with fresh herbs (make ahead and serve chilled or at room temperature), a hydrating salad. Go for a simple and refreshing dessert like grilled watermelon or peaches with ice cream and a butter cookie. Remember, spicy foods help cool your body down so they’re a great addition to summer menus.
Hang the lights and light the candles. Curate your own dinner party play list, choose from a great selection on Apple Music and Spotify or just ask Alexa to do it for you! Go for chill background music with a fun vibe. Avoid music your guests will have to scream over to talk to one another and “sleepy” music that will kill the buzz.
Skip the bug zappers, beetle bags, and citronella candles. Contrary to popular belief they all attract uninvited guests. Repel pests instead with natural, DEET-free bug repellent and incense sticks like my new favorite, Nantucket Spider, made with essential oils and come in a variety of pleasant fragrances.
